Theory of Gravity, after Lenore Tawney

This fall, The University of the Arts received a gift of studio materials belonging to Lenore Tawney, a renowned and influential fiber artist who passed away in 2007. Tawney’s varied collection of objects and supplies was distributed among faculty and students, to be used in creating works inspired by her and ultimately exhibited in tandem with a show of her work planned for January at UArts.

I received an array of tiny glass bottles, an 1896 book on invertebrates, and several wooden cigar boxes. 

The piece I created incorporates elements from all of these and references several of Tawney’s works, some of which are shown below.
