"Old True"

Who is knocking at my window?
Who is mourning that pitiful mourn?
It is I, your old true love.
Open the door and let me in.

The book opens with the passage above, from the ballad “Little Willie,” which bears some similarities to the better-known song, “The Silver Dagger.” This is written on the inside of the front cover and was chosen as a metaphor for my experience in recent years, living far from home and relocating frequently. I consider the Blue Ridge mountains to be my own “old true love” that I returned to after too long an absence.
